A Small Town With Heavy Traffic

Asphalt paving in Oro Grande serves a small unincorporated community, fewer than 1,000 residents, that sits along the Mojave River on the boundary of Victorville and Adelanto, near Interstate 15 on the way to Barstow. Small as it is, Oro Grande has a long industrial history: limestone quarries opened in 1887 and cement production began in 1907. Heavy trucks have been part of local traffic for more than a century.

Mining roots

Silver and gold strikes in 1873 and 1880 led to mining districts and the town named for the Oro Grande Mine. Earlier, in 1859, Aaron G. Lane founded a ranch and store at Lane's Crossing, the first settlement on the Mojave River. The post office was called Halleck from 1881 until it was renamed Oro Grande in 1927.

What we pave here

  • Rural driveways, often long and unpaved
  • Yards and staging areas for trucks and equipment
  • Frontage lots for businesses along the old highway
  • Repairs to older asphalt that has broken up under heavy loads

Building for loads

Where trucks and equipment operate, we use a deeper aggregate base and thicker asphalt, and shape entrances so trucks do not break the edges. For yards, we grade to drain water away from parking and storage areas.

Near the river

Ground near the Mojave River can be softer than on the desert benches above it. We check the subgrade and replace soft material before paving.

Weather

Oro Grande averages a daily high of about 77 degrees across the year and a low of about 44, with about 5.6 inches of precipitation. Summer heat and winter cold cycle through the pavement like elsewhere in the valley.

Route 66 frontage

Oro Grande sits on old Route 66, and a few businesses and properties front it. Entrances there take trucks and visitors, so we build them heavier and shape them to shed water away from the road.

Costs

HomeGuide lists standard asphalt at about $5 to $12 per square foot for driveways. HomeAdvisor puts larger paved areas at about $2 to $4.50 per square foot. Heavy-duty sections and extra base raise those numbers. We itemize the proposal.

Dust

Yards and unpaved areas here raise dust in the wind. Paving the most-used areas cuts dust from trucks and keeps sand out of buildings.

River crossing history

Lane's Crossing was the first place travelers could reliably cross the Mojave River here. Today, properties near the river still deal with soft ground and the occasional flood flow. We grade to keep runoff off pavement and away from structures.

Small jobs welcome

In a small community, many jobs are modest: a short driveway, a parking pad or a few patches. We give small jobs the same site visit and itemized proposal as large ones, and can group them with other work in the area to keep travel costs fair.

Heat and sealing

Summer heat ages asphalt fast here. A seal coat every few years keeps the surface from drying out.

Oro Grande Questions

Can you pave an equipment yard?

Yes, with a deeper base and thicker asphalt where heavy equipment works.

Is the ground near the river different?

It can be softer. We probe and replace soft spots before building the base.

Do you pave long rural drives here?

Yes. We regrade, compact and pave, and can phase long drives.

Who permits approach work?

San Bernardino County, since Oro Grande is unincorporated.

Can old broken asphalt be reused?

Sometimes, as part of the base if it is crushed and compacted. We check whether it is suitable.

Can you rebuild a yard entrance broken up by trucks?

Yes. We cut out the failed section, rebuild the base deeper and repave with a heavier section.

Do you work along old Route 66?

Yes. We pave and repair frontage lots and entrances along the old highway.

Do you need a permit for a driveway on my own land?

Not for work entirely on your property. Approach work in the county right-of-way does.
