Lines Fade Fast in the Desert
Line striping takes a beating in Victorville. Sun breaks the paint down, wind-blown sand scours it, and tires wear it off in the drive lanes. HomeGuide says a striping job typically lasts 2 to 5 years. When lines fade, drivers park crooked, you lose stalls, traffic gets confused at entrances and accessible spaces become hard to identify.
Accessible parking counts
The Department of Justice says that restriping a lot requires accessible spaces under the 2010 ADA Standards. Minimums by total spaces:
- 1 to 25: 1
- 26 to 50: 2
- 51 to 75: 3
- 76 to 100: 4
- 101 to 150: 5
- 151 to 200: 6
- 201 to 300: 7
At least one in every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible, and always at least one.
Space sizes
Accessible car spaces must be at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle. Van spaces can be 132 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 inches with a 96-inch aisle, and need 98 inches of vertical clearance. Spaces and aisles may not slope more than 1:48. Identification signs are mounted at least 60 inches above the ground to the bottom of the sign.
New layouts
For new lots or overlays, we lay out stall widths and angles, drive aisles, accessible spaces near the entrance, fire lanes, crosswalks and arrows, and mark them for your review before painting.
Prep
Paint needs a clean surface. We blow off sand and dust first, and on lots being sealcoated, we stripe after the seal cures.
Scheduling
Paint dries quickly in mild weather. We stripe in sections, early in the day or after hours, so your lot stays open.
Lot types we stripe
- Retail and restaurant lots
- Church and school lots
- Apartment and HOA parking
- Industrial yards and truck parking
- Medical offices with higher accessible-space needs
Each has its own priorities. Medical offices, for example, may need more accessible spaces than the general table because the 2010 Standards set higher counts for facilities that serve people with mobility impairments.
Paint and durability
In strong sun and blowing sand, paint wears faster. We use traffic paint made for asphalt and apply it at a consistent thickness so the lines last. Lines on a fresh seal coat look sharper and tend to last longer than lines on worn, porous asphalt.
Fire lanes and curbs
Red curbs and fire lane markings are set by the local fire authority. We paint them where they exist or where you have been told to add them, with stenciled wording if required.

Line Striping Questions
How many accessible spaces does my lot need?
It depends on total spaces: 1 for up to 25, 2 for 26 to 50, 3 for 51 to 75, and so on, with at least one van-accessible space.
How often should I restripe?
HomeGuide says 2 to 5 years. Sun and sand in the High Desert put most lots at the shorter end.
Can you stripe without sealcoating first?
Yes, after cleaning the surface. Lines show best over a fresh seal coat, though.
Do you paint fire lanes?
Yes, where the fire authority requires them or they already exist.
Can you change my stall layout to fit more cars?
Sometimes. Stall width, angle and aisle widths all affect how many spaces fit. We lay out options for you to review before painting.
Do you remove old lines?
Lines that conflict with a new layout are covered or blacked out so drivers are not confused.
Do you stripe parking for trucks and trailers?
Yes. Truck and trailer stalls are longer and wider than car stalls, and we lay them out to fit the vehicles and turning paths you actually have.
