Why Potholes Come Back
Pothole repair and patching only last when the repair goes deep enough. A pothole forms where water or weak base has let the asphalt lose its support; traffic then breaks the surface apart. Throwing cold patch into the hole fills it for a few weeks, but the weak base is still there. In Victorville, the next windy spring or freezing winter usually brings it right back.
Our repair methods
- Saw-cut full-depth patch: we cut a square around the damage, remove the failed asphalt and soft base, compact new base and place hot asphalt in layers. This is the standard for lasting repairs.
- Hot patch: new hot asphalt over prepared surface damage that does not reach the base.
- Infrared repair: the existing asphalt is heated, reworked with new material and rolled, leaving no seam. Good for trench lines and surface failures.
- Cold patch: an emergency fill until a permanent repair can be scheduled.
Alligator cracking
When cracks join into a pattern that looks like reptile skin, the base under that area has failed. Sealing those cracks does not help much. The area needs a full-depth patch.
Edges
Asphalt edges without a curb break off when tires ride them or when water undercuts them. We rebuild broken edges with new base and asphalt and grade the shoulder so it supports the pavement and sheds water.
When to stop patching
HomeGuide puts repairs at about $2 to $5 per square foot compared with $4 to $10 for replacement, and suggests replacement when cracks cover 60 to 70 percent of a surface or there are multiple potholes. If you are patching the same lot every year, we will show you when an overlay or rebuild costs less over time.
Safety on commercial property
Potholes and broken edges are trip hazards and can damage vehicles. We can prioritize the worst areas and handle the rest with your next maintenance cycle.
Repairs after utility work
When a utility trench is cut through a driveway or lot and patched quickly, the patch often settles. We remove the settled section, compact the trench backfill properly and repave so the repair sits flush.
Planning repairs on a budget
If you cannot fix everything at once, we rank repairs by risk: trip hazards and failures at entrances first, then areas where water is getting into the base, then cosmetic damage. You choose how far down the list to go this year.

Pothole Repair & Patching Questions
Why did my pothole come back after it was filled?
Cold patch over a weak base does not last. A saw-cut repair removes the failed material and rebuilds the base underneath.
How much does it cost to fix a pothole?
HomeGuide's national range is about $100 to $400 per pothole, and many companies have a minimum charge of $100 to $250. Grouping repairs saves money.
Can you repair just the broken edge of my driveway?
Yes. We cut back to solid asphalt, rebuild the base and pave the edge, then grade the shoulder to support it.
Should I patch or replace my lot?
If damage covers a small share of the surface, patch. If it covers most of it, an overlay or rebuild usually costs less over time.
Can patches be sealed?
Yes, once they have cooled and settled. Sealing over patches and the surrounding pavement helps everything blend in and keeps water out.
Do you fix sunken areas around drains?
Yes. We cut out the settled section, rebuild the base around the drain and repave to the right grade.
